Advances in medicine, demographic change and society’s demand for higher qualifications have significantly altered the scope of therapeutic practice in recent years. There is an ever-increasing demand for so-called ‘reflective practitioners’ – therapists who base their practice on the latest scientific findings.
The Bachelor's programme in applied therapeutic sciences (B.Sc.) prepares you for these growing demands of the evolving professional role.
Upon successful completion, the Applied Therapeutic Sciences degree programme qualifies graduates
- to carry out therapeutic work independently (in their own practice),
- to work as staff in hospitals, health resorts, specialist doctors’ and therapists’ practices,
- to take on various managerial roles in health and social care organisations,
- to take on roles in the public health sector and health insurance funds,
- to take on management, Advisory and research roles at therapy and rehabilitation centres,
- for work at scientific institutions in the private and public sectors (health centres, research institutions),
- for work as an author or editor of therapeutic journals or similar publications,
- and much more
The part-time Bachelor's programme in applied therapeutic sciences (B.Sc.), which can be undertaken alongside work or vocational training, aims to provide education that leads to the training of what are known as ‘reflective practitioners’. Depending on the module, the intended learning outcomes relate to purely subject-specific aspects (e.g. assuming the role of an expert, providing advisory services on exercise, physical activity or communication), but also to cross-disciplinary aspects (e.g. management, supporting teaching with regard to practical professional skills).
With the exception of three modules, the programme, which runs alongside professional training (this option can be taken from the second year of training onwards), takes place in Cologne, as well as in Regensburg, Potsdam and Hamburg.
In the part-time degree programme, the main course of study and the three ‘Reflective Practice’ modules take place in Potsdam, Cologne and Hamburg.

Admission with a (specialised) Abitur:
- General university entrance qualification
- Subject-specific university entrance qualification
- University of Applied Sciences entrance qualification
- Subject-specific University of Applied Sciences Qualification
and concurrent or completed vocational training at a vocational college in the following fields:
- Physiotherapy
- Occupational therapy
- Speech and language therapy
Admission without a (specialised) school-leaving certificate:
- A passed master craftsman’s examination or an equivalent qualification and a completed vocational college course in the following specialisms:
- Physiotherapy
- Occupational therapy
- Speech and language therapy
- Completion of lower secondary education or an equivalent qualification, plus a completed vocational training programme suitable for the degree programme (in this case: occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, physiotherapy) and at least two years’ professional experience

Standard duration of study: 5 semesters part-time whilst working | 7 semesters part-time whilst undergoing vocational training (possible from the 2nd year of training onwards)

Degree awarded: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), specialising in physiotherapy, occupational therapy or speech and language therapy
Credits: 180 ECTS credits
Organisation: Face-to-face teaching usually takes place three times per module at weekends.
Tuition fees:
The amount of the monthly tuition fees depends on the modules taken. In the example study plan, 150 euros per month is allocated for the vocational training phase. During the subsequent part-time phase, 300 euros per month is payable. For therapists who have already completed their training, the fee is 300 euros per month. If your module enrolment differs from this, the current fees will be calculated on an individual basis. The total cost is 9,000 euros for the standard duration of the programme.
